Plan Your Tropical Holiday to Airlie Beach: July and August

what to do when visiting the whitsundays

What to Do in the Whitsundays During July and August

Oh July, the most wintry of all the winter months, how we love to hate you. You make us cold, our beach bodies are temporarily forgotten, and nights spent outside under the stars are now a distant dream.

Oh wait, that’s how we felt on our trip to Melbourne last July. Thankfully, we live in Airlie Beach, the heart of the Whitsundays, where our daytime temperatures still average 22-23 degrees Celsius, and we might need to put on a light sweater at night. Jealous yet?

If you’re one of our wintry cold weather friends to the south, might we recommend a visit to Tropical North Queensland? Imagine it now: you’re whisked away on a private yacht that you’ve chartered with your hubs for a few days, only to return to a luxurious stay in one of Airlie Beach’s gorgeous hotels and your days are filled with glistening sunshine, warm ocean water, and effortless adventure.

If you’ve opened up another tab and started searching “flights to the Whitsundays,” we definitely don’t blame you. But once you’ve booked your flights and are already dreaming of what you’ll wear, it’s time to start planning your adventure.

Besides all of the amazing things you can do year round in the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach, here’s what we have coming up in July and August.

See the Whales

Take almost any island tour and you’re almost guaranteed to get an up-close and personal encounter with our friendly giants of the sea. From June to September, the whales are migrating through the ocean near the Great Barrier Reef (our home!), and it’s a breathtaking sight to see.

When: June - September, every year

Where: The Great Barrier Reef

Here’s a list of a few of our favourite tours:

Lady Enid - sail and snorkel on a classic yacht.

GSL Fly & Cruise Package - includes a scenic flight, cruise, and bush walk.

Illusions 2 - an intimate day-trip experience of some of the Whitsunday Islands best kept secret spots!

Ride to Paradise - stay and play on this luxurious multi-day tour of the Whitsundays.

Beachside Brews & Blues Festival

If you’ve followed along with us for any amount of time, you know how much we love Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill. Set immediately on the coast in an awe-inspiring custom-built, open-air building, they’re definitely the best place to go for the meal of your dreams. Visit them for their upcoming Brews & Blues Festival in support of the Australian Cancer Council, and might we recommend ordering the Seafood Platter?

When: 5 July

Where: Northerlies Beach Bar & Grill

Bowen Offshore Superboats

Feel the speed at the Offshore Superboat race! These boats visit the Whitsundays every year for a massive display of power and precision. Bring the family along to the Bowen foreshore to watch these boats race at speeds upward of 200 kilometers per hour!

Whitsunday Reef Festival

Come see what we’re all about in Airlie Beach, the Heart of the Reef, with this fabulous celebration featuring opportunities for great food, fashion, and fun at this all-night party! Fireworks, live music, food stalls, a car show, and more. You definitely don’t want to miss this one.

When: 1 - 4 August 2019

Airlie Beach Race Week Festival of Sailing
